Take Oklahoma +3.5 over Texas  A&M.

It used to be a classic Big 12 game. Now it may be the most classic of the 2012-13 bowl season games. Texas A&M and Oklahoma meet in a Cotton Bowl matchup that could be one of the higher scoring and most dramatic of all of the bowls.  The strongest case that can be made about the Cotton Bowl is that it should be a high-scoring, evenly matched shootout where neither team deserves to be a 3.5 point favorite (as Texas A&M is right now). The Sooners have a good chance to win this game and should keep the game within the line.

On the night of the 28th we have a 5-bone pick out of the Big 12.  Take Texas Tech -13 over Minnesota.  The good news for Minnesota Gophers’ fans; Minnesota made a bowl and Texas Tech passes almost three quarters of the time (the Gophers are better against the pass than the run).  The bad news is that Minnesota may be the worst bowl team to qualify this season and would not even be in a bowl had Ohio State and Penn State both not been ineligible for postseason play out of the Big Ten for 2012.  Texas Tech did lose Tommy Tuberville and offensive coordinator Neal Brown, but the rest of the staff should be set for the bowl game.  The Red Raiders present a strong blend of offensive firepower and defensive play-making.  One of the strongest straight-up winners of the bowl season, Texas Tech, also provides strong value at less than a two touchdown favorite.

Again out of the Big 12 we have another 5-bone pick on 12-29.  Take West Virginia -4 over Syracuse.   While these teams look little alike in style, pace or scheme, they are very similar in strengths and weaknesses. Both are strong passing teams with weak pass defenses, decent run defenses and healthy rosters. West Virginia has played the tougher schedule and is better at its strengths. With a high scoring game expected and an inferior team that has struggled to a 7-5 record despite playing inferior competition, it is not likely that Syracuse will keep this shootout close.

Here are the games that we are looking at for New Years Eve.  These will be posted the morning of 12-31 along with the New Years Day games and a few others.

LSU vs. Clemson

Vandy vs. North Carolina State

Iowa State vs. Tulsa

Thursday night presents a 4-bone pick in the Poinsettia Bowl.  Take BYU -3.5 @ San Diego State.  San Diego State gets full credit for having home field advantage yet still loses to a team with a weaker record in this year’s game.  San Diego State has turned into one of the most run-heavy teams in the country down the stretch this year, running the ball about two-thirds of the time and averaging just over 5 yards-per-carry. That’s the problem. BYU allowed just over 2.5 yards-per-carry to opponents this season.  On a neutral field BYU would be expected to shut down the San Diego State offense and win by doube-digits. On the Aztecs’ home turf, it still looks like a strong BYU victory in a low-scoring, defensively oriented game.  Be aware that the farther this line gets from 3.5 the less value there is.

Only two NCAA  Bowl Games this weekend but there is particular value in one of them……

We have a 6-bone pick in the New Mexico Bowl.  Take Arizona Wildcats -9 over Nevada Wolf Pack.  There are those that would want you to take Nevada to cover the spread because of their offense.  Beware.  Two of the best offenses with two of the best running backs in the country meet in a game that features almost 80 projected points and a double-digit victory by the team from the significantly better conference that has proven it can put up points against the best teams in the nation.  There is no doubting the power of these offenses, particularly on the ground, but, ultimately this game comes down to defense and a comparison of thr numbers. Arizona put up almost identical numbers to Nevada while playing one of the ten toughest schedules in college football. Nevada played one of the easiest schedule in the FBS.  ’Nuff said!

{{3-bone pick for the Army vs. Navy total. Navy has won ten consecutive games in the series and is a significant favorite this week in Philadelphia. However, this appears most likely to be a high-scoring shootout between two of the weaker defensive teams in the country.  With two bad defenses, two strong run offenses and decent weather, the OVER (55) covers most of the time.
